DPWH RELEASES BRIDGE SAFETY MANUALS
Strengthening its commitment to enhance the technical knowledge and capabilities of engineers specifically on quality, efficiency and effectiveness of bridge inspection and repair, the Department of Public Works and Highways has launched the 4 (four) Technical Manuals on Bridge Inspection and Repair. Public Works and Highways Acting Secretary Victor Domingo said that in order to have uniform and detailed procedure in the conduct of bridge inspection and repair, the technical manuals were prescribed to be used by DPWH regional, district and project management offices in the conduct of monitoring, assessment and structural aesthetic condition of bridges nationwide. “ This is part of the department’s disaster mitigation program, ensuring the structural integrity of our bridges along national roads is one of our priorities to assure that it can withstand natural disturbances such as flashfloods and earthquakes so that all major lifeline network are passable even during the event of calamity” Domingo said.
Among the manuals are the Bridge Repair Manual which includes a computer-based/electronic program, Bridge Inspector’s Handbook, Bridge Inspection Manual for the 1st Mandaue-Mactan Bridge (for steel truss type) and Bridge Inspection for the Marcelo Fernan Bridge (for extra-dosed type).
These technical manuals are prepared and developed jointly by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Bridge Experts and members of the DPWH Technical/Counterpart Working Groups.
